By Pricilla Adelman
The Avila Women’s Club was organized in 1983 just a few years after the first families moved into our community. It became clear that the rapid growth of our subdivision needed a foundation to advance the social and educational interests of our residents. A small group of women met to lay the groundwork for such a club. Within a short period of time, the numbers grew to 104 registered members from within the walls. The founding Board included: Pricilla Adelman, President; Sara Ann Valdes, First Vice President – Program Chair; Dede Rappaport, Second Vice President – Hospitality Chair; Mitzi Gill, Treasurer; Patsy Taylor, Secretary; Wanda Solomon, Historian. The first meeting of the club was held on September 16, 1983.
During the initial years we developed programs of wide interest, both social and educational. Social events usually carried a seasonal theme, and often included our husbands, giving everyone an opportunity to meet and greet all the residents, both old and new. There were programs on health, cooking, fashion, art education, financial topics, and many others of mutual interest.
The Community of Avila
It was in the 1970s that Tampa resident, Robert (Bob) Sierra, began the development of a dream that he had for his native Hillsborough County. He merged 900 acres of beautiful land located 10 miles north of the city. The property was laced with natural lakes, graced with stands of oak, pine and cypress trees, conservation areas amidst Florida orange groves, and his vision became clear. Combining his love of golf and course creation with his knowledge of country club community development, he, with the help of his three sons: John Jr. (Hi), Stuart, and Michael, began molding his dream community.
Coining the name “Avila” after a 16th century walled city in Spain, with the streets adopting other Spanish city names and a country club designed in Spanish architectural motif, the area was off to an exclusive start. A championship golf course was laid out and redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 1988. The course has been, and continues to be, the home of many fine tournaments, catering to top world players, as well as residents and members. The country club is the hub of resident interactions, both for great food and special events. Members enjoy the club’s many amenities, including golf, tennis, swimming, fitness center, and multiple dining options. In addition, all neighborhood residents have access to a community park, playground, and a dog park. The neighborhood of Avila remains a peaceful place surrounded by natural beauty, but provides all the advantages of living in close proximity to the city center. The Avila Women’s Club is proud to be a part of the wonderful community.
